Railing Posts FAQs

What are Railing Posts Called?

The vertical posts that provide support and spacing between the top rail and bottom rail are commonly called “balusters” or “spindles.”

Balusters, spindles, or railing posts are essential components of railings. They are typically placed at regular intervals along the length of the railing to prevent falls, provide stability, create structural integrity, and add visual appeal to the railing.

What are Railing Slats Called?

Railing slats – also referred to as “pickets” – are the vertical or horizontal members that make up the barrier between the top and bottom rails. When arranged top-to-bottom, they are commonly known as “vertical pickets,” and when arranged left-to-right, they can be referred to as “horizontal pickets.” Pickets serve as a safety feature in railing systems – preventing falls and providing security while also contributing to the railing’s visual design.

How High Should a Railing Post Be?

Most residential building codes in Canada require guardrails or railing systems to have a minimum height of 36 inches (91.44 centimeters) above the walking surface, such as a deck or balcony.

For swimming pools in British Columbia, a barrier of no less than 60 inches or 5 feet (1524mm) with a self-closing gate is recommended.
